A Conversation with Lika Herrlein

We’re excited to share the inspiring journey of Lika Herrlein, co-owner and manager of Soca BJJ San Diego. In this feature interview, originally published by SD Voyager, she talks about her background in psychology, her values as an entrepreneur, and how she and her husband, Professor Bruno Albuquerque, built a martial arts community rooted in family, resilience, and growth.

More Than Martial Arts

When asked what people often misunderstand about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Lika explained that it’s not just about fighting or fitness.

“Many people think Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is only about fighting, self-defense, or fitness. But what I’ve learned is that people come looking for much more—they are searching for connection, confidence, and a place where they feel they belong.”

That sense of belonging has become the foundation of her academy’s steady growth.

Psychology Meets Jiu-Jitsu

Before moving to the U.S. in 2016, Lika worked for over 10 years as a clinical psychologist in Brazil. Even while raising her children and adapting to a new country, she continued serving patients online. Today, her psychology background is woven into the culture of the academy. She combines empathy with structure, making sure students feel supported while also building strong systems for sustainable growth.

A Family Partnership

Lika’s husband, Professor Bruno Albuquerque, is a 4th-degree black belt with more than 30 years of experience. His mastery on the mats complements her deep understanding of people. Together, they’ve created an environment where discipline, technique, and emotional growth go hand in hand.

Resilience and Growth

Lika shared personal experiences of resilience, including the loss of her mother, which shaped her leadership and empathy. She explained that true strength is not about luck but about perseverance and courage. These values are now part of the academy’s mission to help children, parents, and adults build confidence and resilience through Jiu-Jitsu.
