The history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is filled with remarkable teachers, competitors, and innovators. Among them, Alexandre “Soca” Freitas stands out as a figure whose influence can still be felt today. Not only through his students, but through academies connected to the lineage of Gracie Barra and the broader Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.
While many practitioners recognize the Gracie family name, fewer know the story behind one of the organization’s most respected instructors and competitors. That story not only helped shape the growth of Gracie Barra but continues today through academies and instructors dedicated to preserving the values that built the art.
Gracie Barra and the Legacy of Alexandre “Soca” Freitas
In his book Opening Closed Guard: The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, historian and ADCC Champion Robert Drysdale recounts a pivotal moment in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history.
At the time, Alexandre “Soca” Freitas was one of Carlos Gracie Jr.’s most trusted students. Like many ambitious instructors, Soca dreamed of opening his own academy. However, his loyalty and respect for his instructor prevented him from simply leaving to become a competitor.
According to Drysdale, Carlos Gracie Jr. encouraged Soca to pursue his dream and open a school under the Gracie Barra name, asking only that it not be located directly across the street from the original academy. What seemed like a simple conversation would ultimately help establish the affiliation model that later allowed Gracie Barra to grow into one of the largest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu organizations in the world.
Today, Gracie Barra academies can be found across multiple continents, and the influence of instructors like Alexandre “Soca” Freitas remains an important part of that history.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Rancho Bernardo: Continuing the Legacy
The influence of a great instructor is measured not only by championships but also by the students, families, and communities that continue to benefit from their teachings.
That philosophy is alive today at Soca Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu San Diego, located in Rancho Bernardo at 16558 Bernardo Center Drive.
Led by Professor Bruno Rodrigues Albuquerque, a 4th Degree Black Belt under Master Alexandre “Soca” Freitas, the academy was built on the same principles that have guided some of the most respected figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: technical excellence, humility, discipline, and community.
For many students, training begins with the desire to learn self-defense, improve fitness, or help their children build confidence. Over time, they discover something even more valuable—a supportive community that feels like a second family.
Why Families in Rancho Bernardo Choose Soca BJJ
Choosing a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy is about much more than lineage alone.
While authentic instruction and experienced coaches are important, the culture inside an academy is what determines whether students stay for a few months or continue training for years.
At Soca BJJ San Diego, creating a welcoming and family-oriented environment has always been a priority.
Our instructors know students by name. Parents build friendships with other families. Children develop confidence while learning respect, discipline, and perseverance. Adults find training partners who encourage them to improve while enjoying the journey together.
Whether someone walks through our doors with competitive goals or simply wants a positive activity for themselves or their children, they are welcomed into a community built around mutual respect and personal growth.
More Than Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
The relationships built on the mats often extend far beyond class time.
Throughout the year, our academy hosts events designed to strengthen the bonds within our community, including:
- Summer Camps
- Belt Promotion Ceremonies
- Parent & Child classes and Events
- Women’s Self-Defense Workshops
- Holiday Celebrations
- Community Fundraisers
- Trampoline Park Events
- Guest Instructor Seminars
These experiences create lasting friendships and help transform an academy into something much greater than a place to train.
Many of our students begin their journey through our Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Program and eventually see entire families become involved in training together.
