Rancho Bernardo Jiu Jitsu | Meet the Soca Family

If you’re searching for Rancho Bernardo Jiu Jitsu, you’re probably looking for more than just a martial arts school. You’re looking for experienced instructors, a welcoming community, and a place where your entire family can grow together.

For more than eight years, that’s exactly what we’ve been building at Soca Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu San Diego.

We’re Bruno and Lika, owners of Soca Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and together with our daughter, Giovanna, are dedicated to creating a family-owned academy where children build confidence, adults improve their health, and every student feels like family.

This is the story of how a dream that began in Brazil became one of Rancho Bernardo’s most welcoming Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu communities.

From Brazil to Rancho Bernardo

Our journey began in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil—the birthplace of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

In 2016, we made one of the biggest decisions of our lives: leaving our home, our careers, our families, and everything familiar behind to begin a new chapter in the United States.

At the time, we weren’t planning to become full-time academy owners.

Bruno had built a successful career as an attorney, while I worked as a psychologist. After moving to San Diego, we continued serving our clients remotely while adapting to a new country, a new language, and a completely new culture.

At the same time, we began building something that had always been close to our hearts—our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy.

Little by little, families started walking through our doors.

One family became two.

Two became ten.

Soon, dozens of families trusted us with their children’s martial arts journey.

Eventually, hundreds of students became part of our story.

As our academy continued to grow, we realized we weren’t simply teaching Jiu-Jitsu anymore.

Instead, we were building a community.

Looking back today, it’s hard to imagine our lives any other way.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Martial Arts

Bruno’s martial arts journey began more than 30 years ago.

Like many Brazilian children, he first discovered martial arts through Judo before falling in love with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Growing up in Rio de Janeiro gave him the unique opportunity to train where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was born, learning from some of the sport’s most respected instructors.

His journey began at Gracie Barra, where he built the technical foundation and discipline that still influence his teaching today.

Later, his path led him to train under Master Alexandre “Soca” Freitas, one of the most respected figures in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and an ADCC World Champion.

Under Master Soca’s guidance, Bruno developed not only as an athlete but also as an instructor.

More importantly, he embraced a philosophy that values humility, discipline, technical excellence, respect, and lifelong learning.

Those same principles guide every class we teach today.

More Than Owners—We’re Parents Too

People often ask us what makes our academy different.

The answer isn’t just our curriculum.

It isn’t our lineage.

And it certainly isn’t just our facility.

It’s the people.

Because we’re family-owned, relationships have always come before business.

We know our students by name, celebrate birthdays, belt promotions, tournaments, graduations, and every milestone along the way.

Even more importantly, we celebrate the moments that often go unnoticed.

The child who finally walks onto the mats without being nervous.

The teenager who finds confidence after years of self-doubt.

The adult who earns their very first stripe after believing they were “too old” to start.

As parents ourselves, we understand the trust families place in us every time they walk through our doors.

That trust is something we never take for granted.

Our daughter, Giovana, has grown up inside this academy.

She has watched white belts become black belts.

She’s made lifelong friendships.

She’s welcomed countless new students.

For her, Soca has never been “Mom and Dad’s business.”

It’s simply home.

Why Rancho Bernardo Jiu Jitsu Builds Confident Kids

Initially, many parents visit our academy because they want their children to learn self-defense.

However, they quickly discover that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers so much more.

Every class teaches children how to solve problems, stay calm under pressure, work as a team, and believe in themselves.

As a result, the confidence they develop on the mats begins to appear in every part of their lives.

Parents frequently tell us their children become more focused at school, more respectful at home, and more willing to try new challenges.

Likewise, they notice improvements in discipline, resilience, and emotional maturity.

One of the greatest benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is helping children become less likely to be targets of bullying.

Confident children carry themselves differently.

Rather than reacting with aggression, they learn to set healthy boundaries, remain calm, and make good decisions under pressure.

One of our greatest joys is watching children who once hid behind their parents confidently walk onto the mats by themselves just a few months later.

Those transformations remind us every day why we love what we do.

Rancho Bernardo Jiu Jitsu for Adults

Similarly, many adults tell us they wish they had started training years earlier.

Some come hoping to lose weight.

Others are searching for stress relief after work.

Many simply want to learn self-defense.

Regardless of their reason, they usually leave with much more than they expected.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu improves cardiovascular health, flexibility, mobility, balance, strength, coordination, and endurance.

At the same time, it challenges your mind in ways that few other activities can.

Most importantly, it builds confidence.

Every class is an opportunity to solve problems, overcome challenges, and realize you’re capable of more than you thought.

Over the years, we’ve watched students completely transform their lives.

Some have lost significant weight.

Others have reduced anxiety and stress.

Many have simply discovered a healthier lifestyle and an amazing group of friends.

Whether you’re 25 or 65, it’s never too late to begin.

Psychology Meets Martial Arts

Before opening the academy, I worked as a psychologist.

Although my professional path changed, that experience continues to shape the way we lead our academy today.

Every child learns differently, and every family has its own story.

Likewise, every student arrives with different goals, fears, and challenges.

That’s why we believe in getting to know people beyond the uniform.

Understanding human behavior has helped us create an environment where students feel safe, encouraged, respected, and supported from their very first class.

Parents often tell us that what stands out most isn’t simply the quality of instruction.

Instead, it’s the genuine care they feel from our coaches and staff.

To us, relationships will always matter more than transactions.

A Rancho Bernardo Jiu Jitsu Academy Built on Community

Over the past eight years, we’ve become much more than a martial arts school.

We’ve become part of the Rancho Bernardo community.

We live here.

We shop locally.

Our daughter has grown up here.

We attend community events, support local businesses, and regularly see our students around town.

Because of that, the relationships we build don’t end when class is over.

Throughout the year, we host Parents Classes, Summer Camps, seminars, self-defense workshops, holiday celebrations, and community events that bring families together.

Some of our favorite moments happen when parents decide to train alongside their children.

Watching entire families share the same journey is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

After all, that’s exactly the environment we dreamed of creating.

What You Can Expect From Your First Visit

Trying something new can feel intimidating.

That’s why we do everything possible to make your first visit comfortable and enjoyable.

When you arrive, we’ll personally greet you, show you around the academy, and introduce you to your instructor before class begins.

Children are paired with experienced coaches who help them feel confident from day one.

Likewise, adults are welcomed into beginner-friendly classes where everyone remembers what it felt like to be new.

Most importantly, there’s absolutely no pressure.

Our goal is simply to help you experience Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a fun, supportive environment.

By the end of your first class, you’ll already feel like part of the Soca family.

Why Families Choose Our Rancho Bernardo Jiu Jitsu Academy

San Diego is home to many outstanding martial arts schools, and we’re honored every time a family chooses Soca.

We believe they stay because they feel the difference.

Rather than operating as a large corporate franchise, we’re here every day.

You’ll see us teaching classes, greeting students, talking with parents, celebrating promotions, and supporting our community.

Every decision we make is guided by one simple question:

“Would this be the kind of academy we’d want for our own daughter?”

If the answer isn’t yes, we don’t do it.

That philosophy has guided us since the very beginning.

Our Promise

When we left Brazil in 2016, we brought much more than suitcases.

We brought our values.

Our passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Our love for teaching.

Most importantly, we brought a dream of building something meaningful.

Today, that dream is alive because of the incredible families who have trusted us over the past eight years.

If you’re looking for Rancho Bernardo Jiu Jitsu, we’d be honored to welcome you.

Whether your goal is helping your child build confidence, improving your own health, or finding an activity your entire family can enjoy together, you’ll always have a place here.

Because at Soca Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu San Diego, you’re not just joining a gym.

You’re becoming part of our family.

We hope to see you on the mats.
